从“吞吐量”的英译说起

湖北素有“九省通衢”之称，是中国内陆最大的水陆空交通枢纽和长江中游航运中心。每次随外宾参访武汉新港等货运港或机场时，总会碰到“吞吐量”这个高频词。具体这个词在英文里面怎么表达？是用capacity还是throughput呢？这些问题时常困扰着很多译员。

回答这个问题之前，我们先厘清港口吞吐量和港口吞吐能力（亦称港口通过能力）这两个概念。港口吞吐量是指一年内经由水运输出、输入港区并经过装卸作业的货物总量。港口吞吐能力则是指港口在一定时期内，以现有设备能为船舶装卸货物的最大数量，即最大吞吐量。

理清中文概念后，我们再看看源语中的表达。在美国运输统计局官方报告中有这样一段文字：FAST Act Section 6018 requires BTS to measure port throughput (defined in this report as the amount of cargo a port handles annually) and capacity (defined in this report as a port’s maximum annual throughput, defined by tonnage, TEU, or other unit)。

通过这段文字，我们可知port throughput是指港口每年实际处理的货物数量，portcapacity则是指港口每年能处理的货物最大数量。查阅柯林斯词典，throughput的定义是：the amount of work that is done, or the number of people that are dealt with, in a particular period of time，在某个时间内，实际完成的工作数量或实际处理的人数。而capacity的定义为：the number of things or people that a container or space can hold。即某个容器或空间能容纳的物品或人的数量。由此可知，吞吐量这个词译为throughput是妥当的，capacity侧重的是容纳能力。

综上所述，港口吞吐量应译为port throughput，港口吞吐能力应译为portcapacity。

例句1：2025年花湖机场有望实现货邮吞吐量245万吨。

英文：It is estimated that Huahu Airport’s cargo and mail throughput will hit 2.45 million tonnes in 2025.

在具体的语境中，也可以用其他方式来表达吞吐量这个含义。

例句2：2009年，该组织的成员机场完成旅客吞吐量48亿人次，货邮吞吐量8000万吨，以及7400万次飞机起降。

英文：In 2009, the organization’s member airportshandled4.8 billion passengers, 80 million tons of freight and mail and 74 million aircraft movements. （摘自联合国经济及社会理事会官方文件）

这段文字中涉及到的机场相关的英文表达，也值得借鉴与参考，aircraft movements是机场领域的专业术语，表示飞机起降。

在阅读外文报刊时，笔者还留意到下面这个句子。

例句3：Container volume at Shanghai port in 2021 ranked number one globally.（摘自中国日报英文版）

中文：2021年，上海港集装箱吞吐量位居全球第一。

这里的container volume指的是集装箱吞吐量，与container throughput同义。集装箱吞吐量是指某港口一段时间内进口和出口集装箱数量的总和，通常以TEU为单位。

同理，在谈到旅游行业时，相关新闻报道也常常提到承载量和客流量这个概念。承载量指的是能够接待顾客的最大数量，重在能力。而客流量则是指实际接待的顾客人数，重在实际发生的情况。

例句4：High visitor numbers to heritage sites can override their natural carrying capacity, thus undermining conservation efforts.（摘自联合国教科文组织官网）

译文：大量游客到访遗产景区，会超过景区承载量，进而影响遗产保护工作。

在这里，carrying capacity就是承载量。世界旅游组织也专门为这个词汇给出了定义：the maximum number of people who can visit a tourist destination at the same time, without causing destruction of the physical, economic, socio-cultural environment and an unacceptable decrease in the quality of visitor satisfaction。

例句5：An increasedthroughput of tourists will develop local tourism service industries. （摘自世界银行官方文件）

译文：来访游客数量不断增加将进一步带动当地旅游服务业的发展。

在这个句子中，throughput of tourists就是指来访游客的数量，即客流量。
