“Historical还是historic呢？”这个问题困扰过很多英语学习者甚至职业英语翻译。两个词都源自同一个词history历史，都表示跟历史有关的意思，虽然只差两个字母，但意思却有差别。

查阅韦氏大词典，里面有这样一段话：Historic andhistoricalhave been used interchangeably by many writers, even in recent years. If you would like to avoid being corrected, however, usehistoricalfor matters relating to history (thehistorical society), andhistoricto refer to things having great and lasting importance (ahistoricoccasion). 简而言之，表示历史的、与历史相关的，应使用historical，如历史学会the historical society。表示某事物有着重大和持久的影响，这种影响更多是历史性的，则用historic，如重大历史意义的时刻ahistoricoccasion。

把握以上原则，这能区分开这两个词汇。比如，a historicbuilding表示的是有重大历史性意义的建筑，而ahistorical building则指的是有一定年代的老建筑。如果指的具有重大意义的公园、博物馆、老房子，可以用historic places。美国有一个国家历史遗迹名录National Register of Historic Places，就是官方认证值得保护的历史遗迹。黄鹤楼是中国历史文化名楼，可译为The Yellow Crane Tower is a famous historic and cultural tower in China.

“历史”二字在中国时政话语体系里也是高频词，在二十大报告中，也是频频出现。比如，历史性胜利译为historic feats；在新的历史方位上实现新时代党的历史使命译为realize its historic mission in the new era。以上的语境强调历史性的，具有重大意义，则用的是historic。

而下面这两个例句，更多强调历史的、与历史相关的，所以译为historical：

我国发展站在了更高历史起点上。

译文：We have elevated China to a higher historical starting point in development.

我们有着相似的历史境遇、相同的梦想追求。

译文：We went through similar historical trials and hold the same dream for the future.

当然，翻译“历史”二字时，关键还是要结合语境进行处理，就像下面的两个例句。

保持历史耐心。

译文：We will stay patient in advancing the course of history.

这里的历史耐心，是指要谋长远，从历史长河的大视野看问题，译文很精准地表达了这一层含义。

坚定历史自信，增强历史主动。

译文：We must remain confident in our history and exhibit greater historical initiative.

历史自信就是从历史成就、历史经验中汲取信心与自豪。历史主动是指历史主体顺应历史发展规律和要求,积极有为的推动历史进程发生深刻变化的奋斗意志和实践行为。

英文中seize the initiative表达把握主动之意，所以二十大报告的英译用了initiative。当然治国理政的英译版中还有其他的表达方式，可供参考：proactive in responding to challenges; quick to respond to challenges; take timely actions.

可见，只有对英文词语有细致入微的把握，对中文概念有准确理解，才能达到准确有效的翻译。
