Suizhou lies in a hilly area where the Jianghan Plain joins the Central Plain. Suizhou is the birthplace of the legendary Yan Emperor Shennong, who is one of the forefathers of Chinese civilization and the pioneer of Chinese farming culture. Every year on the 26th day of the fourth lunar month, there will be a root-seeking festival held at Yezu Square, Suizhou Yan Emperor Hometown Scenic Spot to worship Shennong and carry forward Yan Emperor’s culture. As a testament on the long cultural history of Suizhou, a set of bronze chime bells excavated from the Tomb of Marquis Yi of the Zeng State in early Warring States period (475-221 BC), which is one kilometer (0.6 miles) west of the city proper is on permanent exhibition at Hubei Provincial Museum. This set of bronze bells consists of 65 articles, and it is a rare and delicate treasure that establishes China’s instrumental music advances earlier in history by 500 years. Other relic sites and scenic areas including Dahong Mountain, Shennong Cave, the gingko valley and Suizhou Cultural Park also add to the charm of the city. Suizhou made the list of top Chinese historical and cultural cities in January 1994.
