Hot dry noodles is Wuhan’s most iconic food. The dish is made of noodles mixed with thick sesame paste. Make sure you eat the noodles while they are hot. Otherwise, they’ll stick together.
2.热干面是过去码头上的纤夫最爱吃的食物,吃完了就有力气干活,所以一大碗碳水化合物吃下肚,一整天都不饿,很管饱。
Hot dry noodles used to be the favorite food of boat trackers at the wharf. The noodles are rich in carbohydrates, helping provide the boat trackers with enough energy for a full day of hard physical labor.
3.武汉人夏天爱吃小龙虾,冬天爱喝莲藕排骨汤。
People in Wuhan love eating crayfish in summer and pork rib soup with lotus roots in winter.
4.武汉的鸭脖子很有名,在机场、车站到处都能看到速食包装的周黑鸭,可以带一点给家人朋友。但是特别辣,要注意。Braised duck necks are a popular snack in Wuhan. You can find Zhou Hei Ya chain stores at airports, railway stations, and bus stations. We’d recommend that you buy some ready-to-eat duck products for your friends and family to try. But remember to give them a heads-up: they are very spicy!
5.武汉夏天很热,过去没有空调,在街上经常看到打赤膊的人,路边睡凉床,现在生活条件好了,文明程度提高了,这种现象已经很少见了。
Wuhan has hot summers. In the past, few households had air conditioners. That’s why it was common to see men walking on the street shirtless and people sleeping on bamboo beds on the curb. However, it is not a common sight nowadays as people’s lives and their awareness of social etiquette have improved.
6.武汉挨着长江边,空气湿度大,所以夏天热起来像蒸桑拿一样,有非洲留学生说武汉比他们的家乡还热。
Wuhan sits on the banks of the Yangtze River. So, the humidity here is relatively high. If you come here in summer, you may feel as if you’re living in a sauna. Some African students in Wuhan said, “It is even hotter here than in my home.”
7.武汉的冬天很冷,新中国成立之初经济条件很困难,没有规划南方集中供暖,所以这里湿冷的冬天比北方更难受。现在很多家庭自己装了空调和暖气。
Due to the economic difficulties China faced in the 1950s, the government decided not to provide central heating for South China. This policy has lasted until the modern day, so in winter it is more unbearable here in Wuhan than in the colder north due to high humidity and lack of heating. But things are getting better. Many households are now equipped with air conditioning and heating.
8.这种极端的天气,也造就了武汉人泼辣直爽的性格。所以你会经常看到人们嗓门大得好像在吵架,其实这只是他们日常的沟通方式。
As the saying goes, “you are where you live.” Wuhan’s extreme temperatures have shaped the locals’ personalities. They are usually bold, vigorous, and straightforward. They talk in a loud voice even in ordinary conversations. So if you see people talking loudly on the street here, be sure not to mistake it for arguing.
9.武汉现在有9条地铁线,主要是最近十年建成的,从一年开通一条线到一年开通两条线,这体现了湖北的强大的基建能力,这就是中国速度。
Wuhan has nine metro lines in service, most of them were built in the last decade. At the very beginning, one metro line was opened every year. Then, two lines per year. This is “China speed”, and it offers you a glimpse into Hubei’s strong infrastructure.
10.武汉长江大桥全长1.6公里,1957年通车,是新中国成立后长江上建成的第一座公路铁路两用桥。
The Wuhan Yangtze River Bridge is 1.6 km long. The bridge opened to traffic in 1957. It was the first double-deck road and rail bridge over the Yangtze River since the founding of the People’s Republic of China in 1949.
