Overview
Entebbe is one of the closest cities to the equator in the world, with a population of about 100,000 and an area of about 56 square kilometers. The city is situated on the peninsula of Lake Victoria, the largest lake in Africa and the second largest freshwater lake in the world. Entebbe has Uganda’s only international airport and is known as the country’s gateway to the outside world. The city serves as Uganda’s aviation hub and trade center for the south-central region.
Relations with Wuhan
Wuhan and Entebbe started their friendly exchanges on September 4, 2014 by mail.
In April 2018, Mayor of Entebbe led a delegation of government officials and professional runners to Wuhan, called on then Mayor Wan Yong and signed theAgreement onexchangesand cooperation betweenWuhan City, People's Republic of China and Entebbe City, Republic of Uganda, in which the two sides determined to further deepen cooperation in education, sports and culture. The delegation also participated in the 2nd Wuhan Marathon.
In June 2018, Jianghan University sent a dragon boat team to participate in the 2nd Uganda Dragon Boat Race and achieved good results, which was highly thought of by Wang Yang, Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, and Edward Ssekandi, Vice President of Uganda.
In August 2018, Entebbe hosted an exhibition on arts, crafts, fashion and design. The Wuhan Municipal Urban Construction Commission was invited to attend the exhibition, during which the delegation exchanged views on the implementation ofAgreement on Joint Application for Membership of the UNESCO Creative Cities Network. The delegation listened to Entebbe’s ideas about the application and shared their thoughts. The delegation also talked with local young designers.
In April 2019, Mayor of Entebbe visited Wuhan. During the trip, he met with then Vice Mayor Liu Ziqing and discussed cooperation plans for the next year. During his stay in Wuhan, Mayor Kayanja Vincent also participated in the 2019 Spring Cycling for the Military World Games & Citizens of International Sister Cities Touring Wuhan and the 3rd Marathon Healthy Run.
In 2020, in the most difficult times of Wuhan’s fight against the epidemic, Mayor Vincent sent a letter of sympathy to show his care for the people and citizens of Wuhan, expressing his hope that the people of Wuhan would defeat the epidemic as soon as possible.
In June 2022, Wuhan hosted the International Sister Cities Cooperation Forum focusing on city clusters along the middle reaches of the Yangtze River, and the Foreign Affairs Commissioner of Entebbe was invited to deliver a speech.
