Overview
Lying in south-central Gyeonggi-do and bordering Seoul, the capital of South Korea, Uiwang enjoys a superior geographical location, about a 60-minute drive from the Incheon International Airport and a 30-minute drive from Seoul. It has an area of 54 square kilometers, a population of 163,960, and a per capita GDP of KRW 32.7 million. Known as a livable city with a beautiful ecological environment, Uiwang boasts rich forest resources such as Maebongsan and Baegunsan, waterfront parks such as Baegun Lake and Wangsong Lake, and historical sites such as Cheonggyesa Temple. Uiwang’s manufacturing is dominated by machinery, textile, chemical, and electrical industries.
Relations with Xianning
In April 2013, Kim Sung-Jei, Mayor of Uiwang, led a government delegation to Xianning, and the two cities signed theMemorandum on Friendly Economic and Cultural Exchanges.
In April 2014, Lee Kaysam, Deputy Mayor of Uiwang, led a government delegation to Xianning, and the two cities signed an agreement on cultural and artistic exchanges, an agreement on youth exchange programs, and an agreement on economic cooperation.
During his visit to Uiwang in September 2015, then Deputy Party Secretary Chen Shulin signed theSister City Relationship Agreementwith Uiwang Mayor Kim Sung-Jei.
Since Xianning and Uiwang twined, the two cities have sent government delegations every year except for the last two years due to Covid restrictions. As per cooperation agreements, fruitful outcomes have been delivered in civil servant exchanges, higher education cooperation, and exchanges in art.
Right after the onset of Covid-19 in early 2020, mayor of Uiwang sent a message of sympathy to Xianning and donated 20,000 KF94 masks. And Xianning donated 700 non-contact forehead thermometers and RMB 50,000 worth of protective gowns to Uiwang after the pandemic started to wreak havoc in ROK. Despite the raging pandemic, the two sides have carried out extensive online activities in 2021.
