Overview

Saratov is the administrative center of Saratov Oblast, Russia. It is an important economic, cultural and educational center lying on the Volga River upstreamon the right bank of the Volgograd Reservoir. The city covers an area of 394 square kilometers with a population of 830,000. It is located in the southeastern part of the European part of Russia, 858 km southeast of Moscow. As part of the Volga River Federal District, Saratov is one of the key cities on Wuhan’s agenda of international exchanges and cooperation between the middle and upper reaches of the Yangtze River and the Volga River Federal District.

Relations with Wuhan

In August 2015, the Fourth Symposium of Local Leaders from the Middle and Upper Reaches of the Yangtze River and the Volga Federal District was held in Chengdu, which was attended by Chinese State Councilor Yang Jiechi and Mr. Mikhail Babich, the Plenipotentiary Envoy of the President of Russia in the Volga Federal District. Mr. Shao Weimin, then Vice Mayor of Wuhan, and Mr. Alexander Brennin, Mayor of Saratov, signed an agreement on the establishment of sister cities relations at the meeting.

In May 2018, Ms. Nesterenko, Deputy Mayor of Saratov, led a delegation to Wuhan. During the visit, Ms. Nesterenko met with the leaders of Wuhan government and signed theMemorandum on Economic, Trade and People-to-people Cooperation between Wuhan, People’s Republic of China, and Saratov, Russian Federation. In November, the Director of Saratov’s Education Bureau and Gafarov, vice principal of Saratov No. 2 High School came to Wuhan and attended the China International Friendship Cities Conference 2018. They also visited Wuhan Experimental High School and had a discussion with the leaders of the school. It is in the visit that the Saratov No. 2 High School and Wuhan Experimental High School signed an agreement on the establishment of sister school relations. Since then, the two sides have frequent exchanges, especially in culture and sports. Saratov government has sent delegations to participate in Wuhan International River Crossing Festival and Wuhan International Friendship Cities Youth Art Summer Camp multiple times.
