Overview
Tijuana is situated northwestern Baja California State, northwestern Mexico. The city lies along the Tecate River near the Pacific Ocean and is 19 km south of San Diego, California, U.S. It has a population of two million. Tijuana ranks first among all cities in terms of the number of factories. Most of the plants are located in an industrial park consisting of the Dorada District and the New Tijuana Industrial Town. What’s more, Tijuana has the world’s largest production base for televisions and wireless headphones.
Relations with Wuhan
Since Wuhan and Tijuana started their exchanges in 2011, the two sides have organized frequent high-level visits with robust exchanges and cooperation in economy and trade.
In November 2011, Mr. Huang Weiguo, Vice Chairman of the CPPCC Wuhan Municipal Committee, led a delegation to Mexico. The delegation had extensive talks with Mayor of Tijuana, heads of Economic Development Bureau, and the city’s economic and trade, tourism, culture, and education departments. A promotion meeting on the two cities was jointly held. Two sides signed a memorandum on establishing a friendly economic cooperation relationship.
In September 2012, Mr. Liu Liyong, Vice Mayor of Wuhan Municipal People’s Government, led a delegation to Mexico. During the visit, Liu paid a call on the Tijuana Municipal Government and exchanged opinions on establishing friendly relations with his counterpart.
In November 2012, at the invitation of Wuhan Municipal People’s Government, Mr. Carlos Bustamante, Mayor of Tijuana, led a seven-member delegation of government officials and businessmen to Wuhan. The delegation held friendly talks with Mayor Tang Liangzhi. The two sides exchanged views on further development of the two cities relations, and then signed a letter of intent to establish a sister city relation. The letter of intent states that two cities would step up exchanges and cooperation in economy, trade, culture and sports.
On July 12, 2013, Vice Mayor Xing Zaozhong and Mayor Carlos Bustamante signed an agreement on establishing a sister city relation between the two cities.
In February 2014, Mr. Yu Xi, a senior reporter from Changjiang Daily, visited Tijuana in preparation for his book on Wuhan’s sister cities.
In January 2015, an education delegation from Wuhan visited Tijuana. During this trip, a symposium on educational cooperation was jointly organized with Tijuana’s education departments and universities.
In November 2018, Mayor Juan Gastelum led a delegation to Wuhan to attend the 2018 China International Friendship Cities Conference.
In January 2019, Mr. Ding Shunqing, Deputy Secretary-General of the CPPCC Wuhan Municipal Committee, led a government delegation to Tijuana. The delegation had a meeting with Maribel Casillas, Tijuana City Councilor, during which two sides exchanged views on cementing the friendship between the two cities by expanding cooperation in economy, trade and tourism.
In March 2020, Wuhan sent to Tijuana theHandbook of Covid-19 Prevention and Treatmentand the website link of The Knowledge Center for China’s Experiences in Response to Covid-19, a move to share anti-pandemic experience.
On February, 2022, Wuhan and Tijuana, as representatives of sister cities, participated in the lighting ceremony to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Mexico.
