Overview

Engels City is in the central Saratov region of Russia on the east bank of the Volga River. The Ukrainians opened port in Engels in 1747. The city was settled by Germans during the reign of Catherine II. It was renamed after Friedrich Engels, one of the founders of scientific socialism, in 1931. The city is connected to Saratov by a bridge. It is an important industrial city in Saratov with a number of factories fueling the local economy.

Relations with Shiyan

In July 2007, at the recommendation of Hubei Provincial Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries, Shiyan came into contact with Engels. Both sides expressed the willingness to establish sister ties. In December 2009, Chen Tianhui, Secretary of the CPC Shiyan Municipal Committee and Chairman of the Standing Committee of Shiyan Municipal People’s Congress, led a delegation to Russia. On December 10, Chen Tianhui and Yuriyevich Belov, mayor of Engels Municipal District, signed a sister city agreement. In October 2010, the Engels delegation made a five-day visit to Shiyan.
