Overview
Markham is located on the outskirts of Greater Toronto, Southern Ontario, Canada. The city is easily accessible, only an hour’s drive from downtown Toronto. Known as Canada’s High-Tech Capital, Markham is one of the fastest growing cities in Ontario with more than 860 high-tech companies including IBM, Philips, Motorola, and Lucent, among which more than 400 companies are headquartered in Markham. Major industries in Markham include manufacturing, real estate, medicine, and environmental protection.
Relations with Wuhan
In September 2016, Hu Lishan, then Member of the Standing Committee of the CPC Wuhan Municipal Committee visited Markham to attend the celebration of the 10th anniversary of the establishment of sister city relations and the unveiling of Wuhan Avenue in Markham. He also renewed the agreement on sister relations.
In April 2018, members from Markham city council attended the 2018 Seminar for Officials from Wuhan’s International Friendly Cities in Wuhan, gaining a better understanding of Wuhan’s culture, economy, trade and tourism.
In November 2018, Markham sent a delegation to Wuhan to attend the 2018 Conference on Overseas Chinese Pioneering and Developing in China.
In January 2020, Markham sent a video to Wuhan, featuring Mayor Frank Scarpitti saying “Wuhan jia you”, reflecting the deep friendship between the two cities.
In January 2021, the online celebration of the 15th anniversary of the establishment of sister city relations was successfully held. Then Vice Mayor Jiang Wei, Mayor Frank Scarpitti and Consul-General of China to Toronto Han Tao attended the event and delivered speeches.
