Overview

Port Pirie is located at the north end of York Peninsula and the East Bank of Spencer Bay. It is a port city in southern South Australia and the second largest port in the state. It covers an area of 200 square kilometers and has a population of 17,333 as of 2022. It mainly exports silver, lead and zinc from the Brocken hill mining area and wheat produced nearby. The city has large lead smelting plants, assorted refineries for uranium, zinc and silver, chemical industry, and machine manufacturing.

Relations with Suizhou

In October 1995, Mr. Kemadigan, Mayor of Port Pirie, visited Suizhou at the latter’s invitation and signed aLetter of intent for Economic and Cultural Cooperationwith the Suizhou Municipal People’s Government on behalf of the Port Pirie Municipal Government.

In May 1996, a Port Pirie delegation of six paid a 10-day official visit to Suizhou city. Leaders of the two cities had extensive discussions on cooperation in economic, cultural and educational fields and signed theAgreement on Economic and Cultural Exchangeand theAgreement on Educational Exchange.

In May 1997, The Minister of Agriculture of South Australia, Rob Kevin and his delegation visited Hubei Province after a visit to Shandong Province and held talks with the mayor of Suizhou city on how to promote the exchanges between Suizhou and Port Pirie.

In May 1997, a Suizhou government delegation paid a 10-day visit to Port Pirie, during which the two sides reached an agreement on the establishment of an emu farm in Suizhou.

In July 1998, two business representatives from Port Pirie came to Suizhou for a field investigation and signed a letter of intent for cooperation. In January 1999, a joint venture agreement was signed regarding the establishment of an emu breeding farm.

On September 27, 2000, the two cities concluded the sister city agreement at the Beijing International Sister City Conference, which was followed by a delegation visit from Port Pirie to Suizhou with a focus on educational exchanges and cooperation.
