Overview
Khartoum is the capital and largest city in the Republic of Sudan, consisting of the towns of Khartoum, North Khartoum and Omdurman. It is the seat of the Sudanese government and foreign affairs department, and is home to Sudan’s important authorities such as the Presidency, Prime Minister’s Office, ministries and courts. The Khartoum metropolitan area has nearly one million permanent residents, while the neighboring metropolitan area comprising North Khartoum and Omdurman has a population of around six million and covers an area of 386 square kilometers. The White Nile from Uganda joins the Blue Nile from Ethiopia here and runs northwards into Egypt before emptying into the Mediterranean.
