Overview

Duisburg is located in the western part of the Ruhr Region in North Rhine-Westphalia State, Germany. It is a metropolitan borough with a population of nearly 500,000 in 2019. With the world’s biggest inland harbor and its proximity to Düsseldorf International Airport, the city has become an important center for commerce and steel production.

Relations with Wuhan

Wuhan and Duisburg became the first pair of sister cities between China and Germany on October 8, 1982. Over the past 40 years, the two sides have carried out fruitful exchanges and cooperation in such fields as business, culture, science, education, transportation, health, gardening and sports.

In January 2020, after the onset of Covid-19, the mayor of Duisburg immediately sent a message of sympathy to the mayor of Wuhan and personally called on local entrepreneurs to make donations to Wuhan, sending a batch of urgently-needed medical supplies to Wuhan at the most difficult time. So far, leaders of Wuhan and Duisburg have exchanged letters for many times to share information on the latest economic and social developments and promote cooperation in Covid-19 response.

In June 2022, Mayor Cheng Yongwen met Mayor Sören Link online to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the twinning and signed theMemorandum of Exchange and Cooperation between Wuhan, China and Duisburg, Germany to Celebrate the 40th Anniversary of the Establishment of Sister Cities Relations.
