Overview
Located in southwestern Pennsylvania, Pittsburgh is the second largest city in the state. It was once a famous steel city in the US and was known as the steel capital of the world. But now, it has transformed into a city strong in medical, financial, and high-tech industries.
Relations with Wuhan
In September 2016, Hu Lishan, then Member of the Standing Committee of the CPC Wuhan Municipal Committee, visited Pittsburgh to attend the second Chinese Cultural Festival.
In November 2018, James Wolf, the emissary of Pittsburgh Mayor, came to Wuhan to attend the 2018 China International Friendship Cities Conference.
In December 2019, then mayor William Peduto sent a letter to then mayor Zhou Xianwang, inviting Wuhan experts to attend a medical forum in Pittsburgh. The trip was cancelled due to the Covid-19 epidemic.
In late January 2020 when Wuhan was hit hard by the virus, then mayor William Peduto sent a letter to then mayor Zhou Xianwang to express concerns and support. Mayor Zhou wrote a letter back to express appreciation. NGOs such as Sister Cities Association of Pittsburgh made donations to Wuhan, supporting the city in its Covid-19 response.
