Overview

Ohio is located in the north-central part of the US, with an area of 116,000 square kilometers and a population of 12 million. It is also known as the Buckeye State. The capital city is Columbus. Ohio enjoys abundant energy resources in coal, oil and natural gas and its manufacturing industries such as machinery, automobiles, aerospace, rubber and electrical appliances are advanced.

Relations with Hubei

Since Hubei and Ohio twinned in 1979, the two sides have seen frequent delegation visits.

In 1999, Hubei and Ohio celebrated their 20th anniversary of sister relations. In 2009, the two sides renewed the sister relationship agreement. In 2019, Vice Governor Zhao Haishan led a delegation to Ohio, during which a series of activities were held to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the sister relationship and the sister relations agreement was renewed again.

Since 1980, Hubei Province has held seven export merchandise fairs in Ohio, and Ohio has held three commodity fairs in Hubei. In March 1998, bilateral economic cooperation committees were set up in Ohio and Hubei respectively.

In 1988, Hubei and Ohio signed a province/state scientific and technological cooperation agreement and renewed the agreement in 1995 and then in 2005.

In 2005, departments of education from the two sides signed a memorandum on strategic cooperation, aiming to promote cooperation and exchanges in four aspects, namely cooperation between schools, student exchange programs, Chinese/English language teaching, and mutual visits.

Wuhan University and Ohio State University have a cooperation agreement. Huazhong Agricultural University and Ohio State University share a joint doctoral program.

During the pandemic, schools, hospitals and other institutions in Hubei and their counterparts in Ohio sent each other anti-epidemic supplies and held online conferences to share Covid response experience.
